In the final seconds, unbridled joy broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and provided the stand-in Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane was the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to warm the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Experience

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with 40 trophies for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a one-time trainer at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.

“Rollercoaster” was the word McFarlane used to sum up his experience since being thrust into the role.

Another element of his game plan was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a set-piece, a sure sign the City's tempo was being disrupted and the Guardiola blueprint was being frustrated.

The battle grew ever more fractious, with Delap booked after a melee, and City's defensive stalwarts, Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, both substituted injured. Despite late Chelsea pressure, a second goal seemed to be escaping them, with Cole Palmer unable to get a touch in front of goal.
