The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
