The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
