Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
